When I began researching ways to regain my health, one topic came up over and over. This one thing was the root cause of many problems. It was called toxicity (poisoning). And there was a cure for this problem-get the poisons out of the body (detox).
I have struggled with fatigue and not feeling well for many years, but it was in 2010 that I realized how bad things had become. I felt bad most every day (see a listing of my symptoms in this post). I began going to doctors. One doctor suspected that I had lyme’s disease. I researched lyme’s disease and most healing protocols involved killing off the bacteria and then detoxing. Killing off the bacteria causes toxins to be released into the body. These toxins must leave the body in order to feel well and be healthy. That means detox is an important part of overcoming lyme’s disease.
I was also told that my progesterone was too low and my estrogen was a little high, a condition known as estrogen dominance. Estrogen dominance can cause all sorts of very unpleasant symptoms such as breast tenderness, fibrocystic breasts, headaches or migraines (especially during pms), trouble sleeping, PMS, anxiety, depression, digestive issues, weight gain, fuzzy thinking, palpitations, food cravings, irregular bleeding, water retention (bloating), and thyroid dysfunction. There are other hormonal problems that can cause these symptoms in the body, but often estrogen dominance is a part of the problem.
Even worse is what happens when nothing is done for these symptoms and the root causes are never taken care of. Unchecked estrogen dominance can eventually contribute to endometriosis, fibroids, amenorrhea (skipped periods), hypermenorrhea (heavy bleeding), infertility, ovarian cysts, or even uterine cancer. Excess estrogen often comes from chemicals (in plastics, lotions, cleaning products) that act like estrogen in the body.
Mercury poisoning was also mentioned as a root cause of my illness, meaning eventually I should consider having my “silver” fillings replaced. But I didn’t feel well enough to do that right away. Having my fillings replaced would be a source of mercury exposure, and I needed to be stronger and less toxic before I did that. I didn’t want to get sicker. I needed to detox gently first (chelating can be dangerous especially with silver fillings still in place).*
I began to realize that whether I had lyme’s, estrogen dominance, or mercury poisoning, detox was going to be very important for me.
Detox has 2 parts
#1 Don’t let new poisons in. Poisons can come from things touching the skin, from breathing them in, or ingesting them (food and drink).
#2 Get the old poisons out of the body.
It is usually more beneficial to work on #1 first. Getting the old poisons out (#2) is more complicated. And if you minimize any new poisons from making their way into your body then your organs (like your liver, and digestive tract) become more able to get rid of poisons the way they are supposed to. Then alot of old poisons will start to leave your body naturally. As the poisons exit your body symptoms will begin to clear up and often you will lose weight if you need to.
Many people who are really toxic have organs that are overwhelmed and aren’t able to get rid of alot of poison at one time. So the first step to healing for many people (in my opinion) is to change their toxic household and personal care products. (Keep reading for a list of products we use in our house!) In other words minimize poisons that would come into the body from the skin or from breathing the poisons in. Food is also a very important way to help your body rid itself of toxic substances. Should You Detox?
If you are feeling wonderful most of the time, have lots of energy, are a healthy weight, and don’t have any symptoms of hormonal imbalance (pms, bloating, or any of the symptoms or conditions mentioned earlier) then you probably don’t need to detox. If you do have room for improvement then good news-you can feel better! Probably even ALOT better!
The Key to Success
Baby Steps-the longest journey is traveled one little step at the time!
I changed many things (my shampoo, conditioner, soap, laundry detergent, food, cleaners, toothpaste and more.) But I did it in baby steps! Don’t be overwhelmed by all the things I had to change. For me I felt that it was wonderful to have control over whether I was going to continue to be sick or whether I was going to get better and better and better. We can’t control everything in life, but I chose to work on detox so that I could overcome my illness, and minimize the risk of ever getting cancer or some other disease. And I really did change by doing one little thing at a time.
Let’s talk about baby steps you can take right now to lead to greater health, well being, fun (health is fun!), and energy!
Some Ideas for Baby Steps
Choose one of these and work on that step until you feel ready to take another one. Keep in mind that as you make changes you are moving closer and closer to your goal. I often remind myself how far I have come, and that I can already do so many things that I couldn’t before. And I also have future goals and dreams. That motivates me to keep on working on my health. Here are some products to replace your old (toxic) products and other things you can do to detox your way to greater health and vitality.
- Eat more fruits and vegetables. Raw fruits and vegetables are especially good. Organic is really great if you are able to find them because poisons are not sprayed on them. A list of fruits and vegetables that are especially good for your liver are listed in this post. Soak fruits and veggies that you are going to eat raw in apple cider vinegar and water for 20 minutes or more to kill parasites, and to help remove any pesticides.
- Replace your soap- try Sappo Hill Fragance Free Glycerine Soap. This is one of our favorite natural soaps, and we have tried quite a few. 🙂 It is also inexpensive compared to many natural soaps.
- Replace your corn oil, vegetable oil, canola oil etc. with Coconut Oil-The wrong fats are very toxic. The right fats can do wonderful things for your health, and may even help you lose weight. - Replace your shampoo and conditioner. My favorite so far is Aubrey Organics Island Naturals.
- Change your toothpaste. Flouride is toxic especially to the thyroid. We use Earthpaste.
