I have considered doing one of those diets, but never have. The reason is because I have had a hard time pinpointing which foods didn’t make me feel bad, and strongly suspect that I have an intolerance to histamine. Some foods recommended strongly in the healing diets are high in histamine and seem to give me trouble (fermented foods, slow cooked beef broth). I also used to really struggle with adrenal fatigue, and felt that I needed white rice (not allowed on these diets) to help me feel satiated, and to sleep soundly. Grains and carbs give the adrenals and thyroid a break. White Rice was my main grain because it is low in plant toxins and hence doesn’t cause as many problems as other grains. (check out www.perfecthealthdiet.com).
I have been working on healing for quite a few years, and have already eliminated many things that would have slowed down my healing (gluten, dairy, sugar, and soy). If I was able to replace the rice, I would be on the SCD diet. The SCD diet eliminates starches that feed the bad bacteria. My other starches would all be SCD legal (fruit, butternut squash, honey). See the allowed foods here. See a detailed break down of some healing diets including SCD and GAPS here. I also am ready to branch out from my limited diet. That brings me to my new experiment-the navy bean! 🙂 Navy beans are low histamine, low in tannins (something I am also experimenting with), and are SCD legal. Here are some navy bean recipes from around the web. These are just a starting point (they are not all SCD legal and/or low histamine). I am going to experiment!
Black Bean Burgers (I want to make something similar to this with navy beans)
Chocolate Pecan Love Bites – made with chickpeas, maybe I could come up with a similar navy bean cookie 🙂
I can’t wait to get started! Yum!
