I have been working at natural hair care for a long time. It has been really tough to find a natural shampoo that cleans well and makes my hair look good! I have had some failures and successes and I thought I would share them with you so that you don’t have to go through the bad hair phases that I have. 🙂
You might be wondering why I would try all these natural hair products if my old shampoo and conditioner were already working well. The reason that I wanted to use natural hair care was because I knew I needed to detox for various health problems, including “female problems”. I had researched enough to know that many chemicals in personal care products act like estrogens. All this extra fake estrogen can cause some pretty serious female problems-including poly cystic ovarian syndrome, PMS, and uterine fibroids. I liked my old shampoo but not enough to risk it adding to my health issues.
So, I began trying new natural hair care things. I tried going no ‘poo which means using baking soda as shampoo and apple cider vinegar as conditioner. I ended up with really dirty looking hair. But, I persisted because I had read that my hair would get used to the baking soda and vinegar and then it wouldn’t look dirty anymore. It did get less dirty looking. I persisted longer and my hair got very ugly. My hair is naturally brown and it got very reddish and frizzy.
So, I began to purchase natural shampoos. I realized that some of them weren’t very natural! Many of them had pretty bad ingredients. If I was going to pay more, than I wanted truly natural! I researched ALOT and I finally settled on the Aubrey Organics company because they seemed to have truly good ingredients. I looked them up on www.ewg.org so that I could check out all of their ingredients. They only had one bad ingredient, and that ingredient isn’t on the label of my shampoo anymore (so Aubrey must have removed it).
I ended up trying quite a few Aubrey Organic shampoos and conditioners. My hair began to improve. I settled on Island Naturals Shampoo-Tropical Repair and Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner-Moisture Intensive. Those two products worked the best for me. I do have to make sure that I really work the shampoo into my hair because the shampoo does not contain chemical lathering agents. It doesn’t “foam up”. But, it is so worth it because my hair is soft, and healthy looking!
Fast forward a couple of years, and I decided to help my daughter find a natural shampoo for her hair. I hadn’t bought natural shampoo for her yet because our budget was really tight, and she liked her TRESemme deep cleansing shampoo. Then we started having a hard time finding the TRESemme shampoo. So, we tried other brands from our grocery store. She didn’t like any of them.
I decided to do some research and see if I could find a natural shampoo that wasn’t as expensive as mine. Aubrey organics costs around $9 and it is 11 oz. It is a pretty small bottle, and my daughter has A LOT of hair. At Pure Formulas there is a shampoo brand called Beauty Without Cruelty. Beauty Without Cruelty has a Rosemary Mint Tea Tree shampoo that is 16 oz for a little over $7. I looked up the ingredients on www.ewg.org and there were a few ingredients that scored a 3 or 4. (0 means extremely safe and 10 means extremely toxic). I still feel safe with a 3 or 4 rating. Plus, TRESemme’s shampoo has ingredients which rank a 7 or 8.
Long story short-my daughter liked the Rosemary Mint Tea Tree Shampoo better than any shampoo she has used! AND she started using my Aubrey Organics conditioner and she loves it better than any conditioner she has used!
Bottom line-It really is possible to use safer shampoo and conditioner and have pretty hair. And if you would like to order from Pure Formulas keep in mind that they have free shipping on every order!
